The Countdown to Clean Energy: How Long Does It Actually Take to Install Solar?
Making the decision to switch to solar is exciting. You’re ready to slash your electricity bills, reduce your carbon footprint, and take advantage of the new Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (Solar ATAP). But once you say "yes" and pay that deposit, how long does it actually take before you can flip the switch?
The short answer: For most residential homes, the entire process takes about 4 to 8 weeks from the moment you sign the agreement to the day your system goes live.
While the actual installation only takes a few days, the bulk of the timeline involves necessary approvals, safety checks, and grid coordination. Here is the step-by-step breakdown of the solar installation journey.
Step 1: The Handshake (Agreement & Deposit)
Timeline: 1 to 3 Days
Your journey begins with a site survey. A solar provider will evaluate your roof’s condition, orientation, and shading, as well as review your current electricity bills to design a system sized perfectly for your needs (up to 5kW for single-phase or 15kW for three-phase homes under Solar ATAP rules).
Once you are happy with the proposed system design and quotation, you will sign the agreement and pay the initial deposit. From this moment on, your installer takes the wheel.
Step 2: The Paperwork (SEDA eATAP Approval)
Timeline: 2 to 4 Weeks
You don't need to worry about the bureaucracy; your registered solar provider handles this. They will submit your application to the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) via the eATAP portal.
The Solar ATAP Advantage: Unlike the older NEM 3.0 scheme that had strict, limited national quotas that often ran out, Solar ATAP is designed to be more flexible. Approval is now based primarily on local grid stability rather than a race for quota slots, making this step smoother than in previous years.
Step 3: Gearing Up (Procurement & Scheduling)
Timeline: 1 to 2 Weeks (Usually overlaps with Step 2)
While waiting for the official green light from SEDA, your installer will begin ordering the necessary materials. This includes securing the solar panels, the inverter, the mounting racking systems, and all the wiring components needed for your specific roof type. Once your SEDA approval (Confirmation of Acceptance) comes through and the gear is ready, you will get a call to schedule installation day.
Step 4: Roof Action (Physical Installation)
Timeline: 1 to 3 Days
This is the most exciting part of the process. A team of certified technicians will arrive at your home to physically build your solar plant.
-
Day 1: Setting up safety equipment, installing the mounting racks securely to your roof structure, and laying down the wiring.
-
Day 2-3: Mounting the solar panels onto the racks, installing the inverter, and connecting the system to your home’s electrical board.
Step 5: The Green Light (Testing, Commissioning & TNB Inspection)
Timeline: 2 to 4 Weeks
Just because the panels are on the roof doesn't mean you can start generating power immediately. The system must go through rigorous safety and compliance checks.
-
Testing & Commissioning (T&C): Your installer’s engineers will test the system to ensure it is generating power safely and efficiently.
-
TNB Inspection: Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) will send representatives to inspect the setup for grid safety.
-
Meter Swap: TNB will replace your old electricity meter with a new single bi-directional meter. This special meter tracks both the energy you pull from the grid at night and the excess solar energy you export back to the grid during the day for ATAP bill credits.
Once the new meter is installed and your Solar ATAP account is activated, your system is officially commissioned. You can turn it on and start watching your electricity bills shrink!
